The Prison of God by Dibyasree Nandy

They call me ‘God’.

My arms are restrained with chains and fastened in a position so as to perform one task only; to hold the ‘orb’ known as the ‘world’ within my palms, both of which are bound to the sphere via chains, holding it in place. The orb itself is chained.

My legs are manacled with chains as well. Neck, throat heavily tethered, an abundant assemblage of chains coiling around and reaching upwards, as though trying to hang me to death.

My innards too are fettered and shackled.

To further highlight my helplessness, I am enmeshed within an enclosure; also made up of those jet-black chains…. Captive till the end of time.

I conserve stagnation.

Because I simply do nothing but observe, another being was born; outside the cage; unrestrained. To balance out my passivity and the stagnation of the world, my ‘active’ companion took form. Thus, he was an advocate of the ‘seamless flow of causality’, he was meant to ‘move things along’.

He was supremely annoying and cackled incessantly.

I begrudgingly accepted him. I could converse, no, argue with him wordlessly, and he would make snide remarks in return.

“See that fellow over there? He’s desperately praying to you, begging for a miracle! Look at those tears! What’re you going to do about him, eh? Nothing, right? Ha ha ha ha! I can almost taste your soundless wail saturated with sorrow! So leave everything to me!”

He jeered.

-“A miracle is a possibility whose probability of occurrence is astronomically low. However, as long as the probability does not reach zero, its possibility of occurrence does not fall to nil. In other words, it does indeed have a chance, albeit slim, of taking place. Humans have free will, after all. They are free to choose which possibility out of the countless ones before them will lead them towards that astronomically low chance known as a ‘miracle’. There is no need for a ‘God’ like me to intervene.”

He laughed uproariously and whispered in an irksome tone,

“Lying to me won’t work. ‘There is no need for divine intervention’, was it? Don’t be ridiculous. Have you forgotten which aspect of you I represent? You’ve always desired to grant the wishes of humans!”

-“Look, I know it irritates you when I try to stop you from doing what you were born to do. I realize that your role is to let causality flow without any glitches, but don’t overdo it for my sake. You want to allow either progression or regression as opposed to my stagnation, but try to focus on progression please.”

“You see, if I give this human the tiny prod that will lead him towards the miracle; somewhere down the line, he will face misfortune. Everything has to be in perfect equilibrium. Just pile up all your desires onto this weapon that is me; and watch it carve out the fate of a human.”

-“Fate is equivalent to choice.”

“Ever heard of ‘posterior probability’? A choice can be rectified once newer facts are brought to light and then accommodated into prior probability. You’ll still say that human have free will?”

-“When a human makes a decision, he doesn’t really know if it’ll be beneficial. I merely watch them choose a path at the crossroads even if I know it’s the wrong one….”

“I’ll give humans the miracles they seek but then counterbalance it later with bad luck.

Oh, by the way, humans have dubbed you ‘God’. What sort of name would they have for me?”

-“How about ‘Devil’, partner?”
